About Opera Tampa

Celebrating Over Two Decades of Operatic Excellence

For a quarter of a century, Opera Tampa has stood as the jewel in the Straz Center for the Performing Arts crown, offering the Tampa Bay community a gateway into the opulent world of opera. As the resident opera company, it has brought to the stage not only a plethora of breathtaking productions but also Still, it has also extended its reach beyond the footlights through significant educational outreach, nurturing a love for this art form among the young and old alike.

A Symphony of Talent and Spectacle

Opera Tampa is synonymous with grandeur, bringing together world-class conductors, vocalists, and award-winning designers. Each production is a testament to the collaborative spirit that drives this company, resulting in performances that capture the essence of opera’s majesty. It’s where the spectacle of opera – often referred to as “the queen of the performing arts” – is celebrated in all its glory, from the intricate set designs to the emotionally charged arias that resonate long after the final curtain.

The 2024/2025 Season: A Tapestry of Emotion and Intrigue

The upcoming season at the Straz Center promises to be a rollercoaster of emotions, featuring the intense dramas of La TraviataTurandot, Hansel and Gretel, and more. These productions, rich in narrative complexity and musical depth, showcase Opera Tampa’s commitment to presenting a repertoire that spans the gamut of human experience – from the heights of romantic passion to the depths of despair and revenge.

Leadership at the Helm

Under the visionary leadership of Judith Lisi, Opera Tampa continues to thrive. Lisi, the general director of Opera Tampa and president of the Straz Center, has been instrumental in guiding the company towards new horizons. The artistic baton, now held by Daniel Lipton, brings a wealth of international experience and a fresh perspective to the company’s artistic direction. Lipton’s tenure has already seen the successful launch of the “Florida Opera Festival,” further cementing Opera Tampa’s status as a cultural cornerstone.

A Venue Fit for Royalty

The heart of Opera Tampa’s magic lies within the walls of the Carol Morsani Hall, a part of the Straz Center complex. With a seating capacity that accommodates over 2,600 patrons, it stands as a temple of art where each performance is an invitation to embark on an unforgettable journey into the world of opera. The smaller, yet equally intimate Ferguson Hall, with its 1,042 seats, offers additional space for more diverse operatic explorations.

As Opera Tampa continues to weave its spell over the hearts of opera enthusiasts and novices alike, it remains a beacon of artistic excellence, illuminating the cultural landscape of Tampa Bay with each spellbinding performance.
